“We” Documentary: A Grand Epic of Historical Changes in the Soviet Union 1987-1989

Jura Podnieka’s film “We” was made during the historical changes at the end of the 20th century and shows the moment of the Soviet Union before its disintegration from 1987 to 1989. The film follows the development of dramatic and tragic events during the so-called “perestroika” in different regions of the USSR in five episodes (“Fracture”, “Awakening”, “Can you hear us?”, “Wall”, “Fight to the End”): we see riots in Riga, Uzbekistan , earthquake survivors in Armenia, striking workers in Yaroslavl, the return of residents to Chernobyl, Gorbachev’s conflict with Yeltsin, Sakharov after returning from exile, the escalated conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh and other culturally and politically significant scenes and people. The documentary “We” is not just a chronicle of historical events, but can be fully considered as a grand epic of the time of historical changes. Shooting “We” required extraordinary courage, strength, mind and endurance from its creators to be present everywhere and captured on film. Podnieks and his group started a work that is difficult to find similar: they created an epic of this era in the course of an era of historical changes. It took incredible strength to be everywhere and film everything. However, perhaps even greater moral strength and masculinity are needed in order not to deviate from the principles of humanism in the struggle of political likes and dislikes, in supporting one’s own and in whipping one’s opponents, so that everything is always measured by the only true yardstick – the human being as the main value.

Latvia, 1989.
