We discover how “The song dances. Deja skan” restoration of the notes of the golden repertoire was carried out during the creation
As sheet music restorer Edgars Linde admits, the whole process took place “by ear”, where absolutely everything heard on the recording must be converted into sheet material so that the live orchestra can play and the choir can sing. Most of the musical material had notations for the piano part, but the original notation of the piece with all the instrumental parts mostly does not survive, and if it does, it is not in digital format. The recordings of the sounds, to which the dancers dance, have also been preserved even from the fifties of the last century. For example, the well-known composition “Es măceju danci vest” includes violins, violas, cellos, contrabass, brass, choir, etc. However, there is no sheet music for these instruments, to get it, Edgars Linde listened to each recording and transcribed the notes.

“What I couldn’t hear, I put together as it should be. Easier, of course, were the compositions with a smaller musical composition, but there are also large scores, especially from the fifties and sixties of the last century, where there was a folklore orchestra that came together and recorded in the recording studio of Latvian Radio. Each piece was like an exam to test my strength.”

The author and producer of the idea, Edžus Arums, says: “After the project, I would like to hand over all sheet music and audio material to the Latvian National Cultural Center, so that anyone who wants to perform one of these pieces live would have such an opportunity, thus promoting the synthesis of song and dance in various formats throughout Latvia. The concert performance will also be recorded in audio format and the newly created recordings will also be available to everyone.”
On August 5 and 6, two traditions – song and dance – will be combined in Mežaparka’s Great Stage. The name of the concert performance “Dziesma dejo. The dance sings” is also a sign of form, because the dancers will also sing and the choristers will also dance. The repertoire consists of well-known choral and dance numbers, as well as new creations, therefore the composer and head of the musical part Uģis Prauliņš has created a unified sound design for the entire concert performance. Artistic directors – Agris Daniļevičs and Mārtiņš Klišāns. Around 6,000 participants from all over Latvia and abroad, as well as a lineup of 14 musicians, will perform it on the Mežaparka Big Stage. This time, the audience will sit in the places intended for the chorus of the renovated Mežaparka Grand Stage, and the participants will dance in the square, where the audience benches are usually located. The entire performance will take place in a “live” performance.
