We celebrate the parents of St. Mother of God – 2024-09-09 04:05:23

Parents of the Virgin Mary

On September 9, the church celebrates the feast dedicated to Saints Joachim and Anna – the parents of the Blessed Virgin.

What you can and cannot do, what is the best prayer on this day, what are the traditions and customs?

History of the holiday

Out of grief, Joachim went to the desert to pray to God and ask for the birth of a child. Then an angel appeared to him and announced that his descendants “will be talked about throughout the world.” And after 9 months, Joachim and Anna became parents. They promised that their child would serve God and gave their daughter Mary to the Jerusalem Temple, where she lived until she came of age.

Traditions, customs and beliefs related to the holiday

The people once called the day of Joachim and Anna the day of mothers in labor. These saints are considered patrons of women in childbirth and childless women. On this one, young mothers are congratulated and midwives are honored. Women who wanted to have children prayed to the saints for conception.

Fortune telling

If there are many cobwebs at home, autumn will be warm and winter will be frosty. If it snows — expect a bad harvest next year. If mosquitoes appear, the winter will be mild. If the willow leaves have fallen – it will be early winter, and if the cherry leaves have not yet fallen – this means warm weather. If the onion has many scales, the winter will be cold.

It is forbidden to borrow or lend money on this day. It is forbidden to show envy, slander and start quarrels. Heavy physical labor is also prohibited. Craft activity involving the use of sharp objects should also not be carried out

Prayer for the holiday

Lord, God of our parents, You gave the grace to Saints Joachim and Anna, that from them came into the world the Mother of Your incarnate Son, grant us through their protection to understand the salvation that You promised to Your people, through Christ our Lord . Amen!
