Europe Day marks the date when French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman read the historic declaration of unification in Europe. On May 9, 1950, 5 years after the end of World War II, he called for the union of French and West German resources and coal and steel industries to avoid future military conflicts. The “Schumann Declaration” was the foundation of the European Coal and Steel Community, the forerunner of today’s EU.

Robert Schumann proposes to create a supranational European institution to be responsible for the management of the industry. The countries he appeals to have until recently been involved in a devastating military conflict with each other. On this day, the beginning of the unification of the countries in Europe and the maintenance of peaceful relations on the Old Continent is set. This proposal remains in history as the “Schumann Declaration” and is considered the foundation of today’s United Europe, the beginning of the path taken towards a community of shared values and common interests.

In 1985, the leaders of the countries of the European Union at a meeting in Milan decided that May 9 should be celebrated as Europe Day. From then until today, May 9 has symbolized the quest for unity, peace and prosperity in Europe. In Bulgaria, it was announced by Resolution No. 54 of the Council of Ministers of March 29, 2005 to celebrate May 9 – Europe Day.
