“We cannot be fooled”: Carter responds to Tohá and calls on her to make transparent figures on police deployment in Florida

After an exchange of statements between the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, and The mayor of La Florida, Rodolfo Carter, this afternoon the communal leader again lashed out against the Secretary of State due to the announced resources for security and the transparency regarding the number of police officers deployed in the commune.

Carter, in the anteroom, pointed out that “We have serious doubts that this plan is currently politically oriented to defending communities that this government is interested in promoting in the upcoming municipal elections.”

In this context, during the morning, the chief of staff responded to questions raised by Carter regarding the deployment announced within the framework of the second stage of the Street Without Violence plan and which included modifications in police operations with the so-called “swarm” deployments.

“We had a meeting with all the mayors of the Metropolitan Region, where the Carabineros authorities presented the plan. The plan is to distribute these additional teams in 192 grids located in the 52 municipalities of the Metropolitan Region, without exception.“He said, dismissing Carter’s suggestion, during an activity in La Granja.

“So I would like to know on what basis the mayor makes this statement. What is the background behind his statement?” he asked.

Now, the municipal leader insisted again that Minister Carolina Tohá must make transparent the figures of the police that the municipalities will have in the Metropolitan Region under the framework of the new stage of the Streets without Violence plan, such as Florida or Puente Alto.

In this regard, Carter said that in the new stage of the Executive’s plan to reduce violent episodes in public places, Only one night operation has been carried out in his commune, which included the deployment of 20 uniformed officers.

“We must ask the Minister of the Interior not to be so clumsy. Minister Tohá has been acting with an incredible level of clumsiness. She is the one who handles the figures, the one who has the data… She is the one who knows and the government knows perfectly well how many police officers, where and how many times they have been used, and these are data that they do not share. We mayors do not have any concrete numbers,” Carter said.

“What we do know is that La Florida two weeks ago, in the last major metropolitan operation There were 20 carabineros for all of Florida. All of Chile could see how hundreds of carabineros were deployed in Santiago. The Minister of the Interior cannot take us for fools. I know that she thinks that Chileans are stupid, but she is the one who has the data… Minister, don’t be stupid, you have them.”criticized the mayor of La Florida, in response to the request to make transparent the data that supported his criticism regarding the police deployment.

In this regard, Carter called on Minister Tohá to act truthfully with respect to the data: “Minister, make the data transparent, but without lying, without upsetting us, Because it is evident that there is a different treatment for central Santiago and for the government communes than for the communes that are not governed. How many police officers have been used in Santiago? How many in La Florida and how many in Puente Alto? I know that they are campaigning, it is hard for them to admit it.
