We can find gas, but without a pipe to where? – 2024-08-12 06:43:22

/ world today news/ There is a possibility that Bulgaria will become a gas power. You know that for “Silistar” “Shell” has confirmed its participation. In “Khan Asparuh” the actual drilling will begin in a month or two.

It should always be kept in mind that these expectations are potential, because with “Silistar” it is necessary to see what the real geometry of the “traps” is. “Khan Asparukh” is already known. But there is one detail – let’s hope that this will not happen here. In order to see if there is actually gas in these gas “traps”, a well should be drilled. For reference, in the North Sea, which is one of the major suppliers to Europe, about 30% of the drillings have turned out to be dry. But in general, even if some of the wells are dry, there are clearly available quantities of gas offshore. The proof is that Romania, a little north of us, produces more than 2 billion cubic meters of gas per year. But the question is, once we start getting it, what are we going to do with it? If the South Stream route had been built, we would have been able to export. Because our consumption of Russian gas is about 2.9 billion annually. We assume the ideal that we

we are giving up Russian gas, which is quite complicated because we have a contract until 2030.

But in all cases, after that, the question arises again – “Where to?”. We as a country are territorially damaged, especially for gas supplies, because if we have these quantities of gas, the only way for them to reach Europe is through a pipeline system, that is, gas infrastructure, which we do not yet have. And to liquefy gas – you know that we cannot export through the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles. So there is the question of the state of the gas infrastructure. Of course, this is done preventively. The interconnector to Romania will have a capacity of about 3 billion cubic meters, which means that we already have a potential opportunity to extract certain quantities of gas to Europe. The interconnector to Serbia is about to be built. The ideal option was to use the South Stream route. This route for “South Stream” that passes through our country has its value because all the easements are defined, the owners are compensated, there are projects, etc. So in the end, sort of

we have both the technical and the potential to transform from a consumer to a net exporter

on gas. The thing is, it won’t happen right away. In 4-5 years at the earliest, we will be able to have a clearer idea of what can actually be there, what the potential quantities will be, and adjust the export system accordingly.
If the concession was Bulgarian, then it would be realistic to know what the price would be. The price policy is determined by the concessionaire. We in this sense, although a net exporter of gas, in the end what we will receive will be the concession fee. It would be a different matter if we could invest in these wells, take the risk and own it entirely. Then we could really be full-fledged masters in terms of price. Unfortunately, with the state of our economy, we cannot afford that. There are still many questions, but it is much better for us, albeit through a concessionaire, to extract gas.
