Huge amounts of urea were dumped into the sea during the first rescue operation
I didn’t know it would leak, this crane is not for ports. However, we continued, says the head of the Maritime Administration, Capt. Zhivko Petrov
Criminal negligence for years, there will be fired, threatened Transport Minister Hristo Alexiev
The company that rescued the Kursk submarine will help pull the Vera Su ship stranded near Kamen Bryag.
This was stated at a briefing on Tuesday afternoon by Transport Minister Hristo Alexiev.
The Russian nuclear submarine “Kursk” sank in August 2000 in the Barents Sea and its entire crew of 118 people died.
He takes the case personally. He used his personal contacts with representatives of the Dutch company and a plan for the withdrawal of the ship is currently being prepared.
The Maritime Administration has given the owner too much time to draw up a plan and bring the ship out. Therefore, with my order, I stopped all activities. For years, the state has not indicated how to proceed in such a situation. Now, as superheroes, we will act extraordinarily, “the minister explained.
As “24 Chasa” wrote, the Turkish ship ran aground in the rocks near Yailata on September 20, loaded with 3,000 tons of urea and fuel. A dispute between its owner and the insurer prevented a rescue operation from being launched for more than a week.
However, it turned out that the bad weather could send the ship into the rocks, it could split and its cargo could be poured into the sea. Social networks boiled with discontent.
Experts
they prophesied
eco-catastrophe,
which by the way
has not passed
According to experts from the Institute of Oceanology, urea is not explosive, but it causes excessive flowering of plankton and sea fish.
Diver Naiden Nedev found a breach in the ship, and the samples showed an increased content of nitrite nitrogen in the water.
On Sunday, September 26, Transport Minister Hristo Alexiev issued an order for the rescue operation to begin immediately. Before “24 hours” the head of “Maritime Administration” Capt. Hristo Petrov explained that a floating crane was provided, on which a machine for repackaging the cargo would be placed.
The removal of the ship would be considered only after September 30, when the wind calms down, and until then two anchors should stabilize it, Zhivko Petrov said on Sunday.
However, a fault stopped the operation of transferring the nitrogen fertilizer to the packaging machine on Tuesday. Later it became clear that the barge, which was to transport the cargo to Varna, was also stranded.
The operation began on Monday, September 27, at around 9.30 pm, after a floating crane and a barge arrived at the ship to transfer part of the cargo. However, a video shot by Maritime.bg shows how
large part of the
urea
spills in
the sea
Huge quantities literally flow out of the bucket of the floating crane. The computer system of the packaging machine burned down and the transport of urea continued through the clamp of the crane.
The Minister of Environment and Water Asen Lichev issued an order to stop the overloading of nitrogen fertilizer due to the imminent danger of pollution of the Black Sea.
The applied method of unloading is radically different from the ones approved by the Ministry of Environment and Water, they reacted from there. At a meeting with the institutions responsible for carrying out the rescue operations, it was decided that 700 tonnes of the ship’s bulk cargo would be packed in bags of one ton each and then transported by barge under enhanced safety measures for the marine environment.
The method of “Maritime Administration”, which was approved by the Ministry of Environment and Water, is unloading through canvas decks, which are filled by a grapple on board the ship through a special facility (funnel) and their subsequent transfer by crane to the barge. The meeting paid special attention to that
between
the shipwreck
and the barge must
to be stretched
canvas,
to prevent possible pollution, the ministry added.
In practice, radically different actions have been implemented than those approved.
It is not clear how many hours during the night the unfortunate attempt to unload the manure lasted, but on Tuesday morning it turned out that the barge was stuck due to the many stones in the area.
A few hours later, the long-awaited action to withdraw the ship started, in which two tugs joined. They tried to pull the “Vera Su” in reverse after the fuel tanks of the 32-year-old ship were emptied.
Not long after, however
one of
the ropes,
With witch
drag
pull the ship,
breaks
and the operation stops before it actually starts.
It was also terminated due to bad weather and the forecast for increasing wind and sea waves. The ship, which is about 200 tons lighter, continues to fight the waves and remains in the shallows of Yailata, the 9-member crew is on board.
The ship is very firmly stranded on the rocks, we made an attempt to pull it, unfortunately, unsuccessful, said at a briefing on Tuesday the director of the Maritime Administration. Zhivko Petrov.
“We do not have the technical means –
the tap is a lot
big, the wind
blow it and
download it on
the rocks
The crane is 22 m, in fact there is nothing to hold it, this crane is not for port unloading “, explained Petrov.
“I didn’t know there would be a manure leak, the crane was hired with a grapple to unload, because that’s what we have. I saw what it was about and despite everything we decided during these two hours that we have to take off part of the cargo, “said the captain.
“Criminal irresponsibility years ago” – this is how Minister Hristo Alexiev commented on the action.
“With the equipment we have, we cannot count on the withdrawal of a stranded cargo ship to happen. The only decision that can be made at the moment is to strengthen it with additional 4-ton anchors, “he explained.
“We notice unregulated contacts and actions by the administration and therefore we will seek responsibility. I will check who slept on the chain and did not do his job and I will be absolutely uncompromising “, said Alexiev, emphasizing that there will be dismissals.
He slept with
security
they are inadequate
were the sailors
aboard the Vera Su when the ship got stuck in the rocks near Yayla.
The Turkish ship sailed for 2 hours on the waves without the intervention of the crew. Inadequate condition of the sailors is the most probable reason for “Vera Su” to crash into the rocks. This was said to journalists on September 20 by the director of the General Directorate “Emergency Rescue” at the Executive Agency “Maritime Administration” Rumen Nikolov.
He did not specify whether they were under the influence of alcohol or simply fell asleep, but from 1.54 am to 4.15 pm on September 20, the course of “Vera Su” was not changed.
The operation to remove it will be at the expense of the state, and subsequently it will seek money from the shipowner.
