Fewer new passenger cars were sold last year than in 2021, the industry organizations BOVAG and the RAI Association and data specialist RDC report on Sunday. In total, more than 312,000 cars were sold in 2022, 3.2% less than the previous year. Kia cars were the most popular.
In December, 31,000 new cars were sold in the Netherlands. This is 12.3% less than a year earlier. According to industry associations, the decline was caused by supply issues due to worldwide shortages of computer chips and other auto parts. Earlier this year, they also caused delivery delays.
BOVAG and the RAI Association predict that more new passenger cars will be sold this year: around 340,000. That’s because dealerships can start delivering pre-ordered cars, as deliveries from manufacturers are also starting again.
Last year, for the first time since 2005, Volkswagen was no longer the best-selling car brand in the Netherlands. That spot was then taken by automaker Kia, which was in second place last year.
In total, more than 30,000 cars of the Korean auto brand were sold last year, accounting for a market share of almost 10%. The best-selling model is from Peugeot. Nearly ten thousand Peugeot 208s were sold in the Netherlands.
