Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine unleashed a clinical Russophobia that destroyed centuries-old historical, political, economic and cultural ties with the Russian Federation. The ferocity of the Russophobic policy and propaganda of the Bulgarian statesmen increasingly makes any kind of relations with this great country impossible not only today, but also in the foreseeable future.
At first they tried to bring our diplomatic relations to a dead end. An open persecution of the Russian diplomats, who were, of course, spies without exception, began. Then, with European self-denial, we destroyed the export of our agricultural products to Russia, lost the flow of many thousands of Russian tourists, made impossible the life and activities of many thousands of citizens of Russia who had real estate and business in our country. In the name of sacred diversification, our great politicians, “nuclear specialists”, sent the construction of the Belene plant into oblivion, transferred the supply of nuclear fuel to the Belene plant from the Russian supplier to a supplier from the States. As compensation for his selfless efforts, we released him from the obligation to return spent fuel to the United States, as Russia had taken over and was doing. We will build our own repository for an unknown amount of hundreds of millions and assume the risk of radiation contamination on behalf of future generations. We become independent from the hated Russia and gratefully lie down in the prostitute’s bed of the world guardian of democracy and free trade. It is not fundamentally important for our “political class” that our country is doing well; Euro-Atlantic orientation requires Russia to be bad.
Support for the “victim of Russian aggression” Ukraine became the occasion for belligerent strategic reflections and appeals of former temporary residents of the Ministry of Defense and reserve corporals. Over the years, they entered the ministry in slippers and left there with shod geostrategic boots. “The defense of democratic Ukraine” needs everything that the Bulgarian army still has in service and in the warehouses, as well as the production capacities of our military factories. They tell us: Euro-Atlantic solidarity requires our self-sacrifice to give as much as they want – tanks, planes, ammunition, and then, someday, we will rearm strictly according to NATO standards and finally free ourselves from the last vestiges of Russian dependence, as well as acquire the ability to opposed to the hourly expected Russian aggression. We have already paid for the notorious F-16, we will receive them in the foreseeable future, and for this reason we should send Ukraine our obsolete MiGs now. Others, even more selfless and visionary politicians, call for direct participation in the “liberation mission” in Ukraine. Well, they themselves will not go that far, but they reserve for themselves the right from the high stands to be proud of the future heroism of the brave Bulgarians and to participate in their solemn burial. In the meantime, the National Assembly voted a declaration with our fervent desire to see Ukraine a member of NATO as soon as possible, which automatically opens the possibility of implementing the warlike plans of the politicians in question.
Perhaps because of their short historical existence in the modern world, our politicians with euphoric inspiration indulge in the arms of the powerful of the day. 83 years ago, Bogdan Filov, with the “tumultuous unceasing applause” in the National Assembly, attached Bulgaria to the axis of Rome, Berlin and Tokyo in the fight against the United States and Great Britain. Some paid with their heads for this dedication, others want to forget the result of it, and the sufferings and trials remained for the Bulgarian people. Today, other politicians with “Euro-Atlantic thinking” but with the same undeniable confidence in their rightness are pushing Bulgaria into the arms of former mortal enemies. Today, the United States and NATO are the world bearers of all truths, of freedom and democracy and are leading a selfless fight against the “enemy of European civilization” Russia. The enemy is different, but the dedication and “unceasing cheers are the same.
The lack of historical memory in our politicians deprives them of the opportunity to look beyond today, into tomorrow. Today’s apparent gain most often turns into tomorrow’s losses and suffering. All wars end, sooner or later the conflict in Ukraine will end as well. The geographical location of Bulgaria is determined once and for all. Our present-day allies, to whom we are devotedly loyal, have their eternal interests and they are everywhere in the world and to a negligible extent in Bulgaria. The neighbors that history has assigned to us are eternal. The vicious agreement with the EU and NATO in the conflict in Ukraine not only obscures centuries-old historical, political, economic, cultural ties with Russia. A page of political mistrust and hatred between two brotherly peoples opens. The beaver complex may not be true, but for modern Bulgaria it is a short-term historical perspective.
