There are 338 more deaths per 100,000 people in Bulgaria
Bulgaria ranks second in the world in emergency deaths during the pandemic, according to a study by The Economist. The journal analyzed data from a variety of sources, not just coronavirus death registration systems, to form a comprehensive view of the impact of the epidemic.
Mortality data before and after onset were compared. Thus, there are 338 more deaths per 100,000 people in Bulgaria, which is twice as many as the victims of COVID-19.
Before us is Peru
with 412 dead,
and after us
Mexico with 321
The top ten also includes Russia, Lithuania, Northern Macedonia, Ecuador, Serbia, the Czech Republic and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The publication points out that Bulgaria registered the highest weekly levels of extraordinary deaths in the entire survey. This happened in November and December last year.
Europe has suffered some deadly flu waves since 2016, but the death toll is much lower than COVID-19. Although most of the dead are now over the age of 65, the number of deaths among Europeans between the ages of 45 and 64 was 40% higher in early April last year, according to The Economist.
His analysis found that

indicating that their health systems were well prepared to cope with the coronavirus load and that the authorities had taken timely and adequate measures.
In Central Europe, only the Netherlands and Switzerland have registered more deaths during the first wave of the epidemic than they usually had in those months of previous years. In general, with very few exceptions

The countries most affected are the countries of Southeast Europe, where not only the deaths from coronavirus, but also deaths in general are increasing. There are several possible reasons for this. On first place,

because of the pandemic. Refusal to seek medical help for fear that you may become infected. Small testing capacity that does not capture all cases of COVID-19.
Russia has the highest number of extraordinary deaths – 458,370 more than expected between April last year and February this year, while it reported only 84,680 deaths from coronavirus during that period.
In comparison, such a discrepancy is not observed in the United States. From March last year to March this year, 510,460 victims of COVID-19 were registered there, and the number of extraordinary deaths was 592,920. The Economist notes that outside America and Europe very few countries publish data that can answer what is the real impact of the pandemic.
