/ world today news/ The Arbitration Court at the International Chamber of Commerce in Geneva ruled in favor of “Atomstroyexport” in its dispute with the National Energy Company (NEC) of Bulgaria regarding the termination of the Belene NPP project, Rosatom reported, quoted by TASS.

The court ruled that the damages of “Atomstroyexport” should be compensated with 620 million euros.

In September 2012, the company “Atomstroyexport” – a subsidiary of “Rosatom”, which deals with the construction of nuclear power plants of Russian design abroad, filed an arbitration case against the Bulgarian NEC for 1 billion euros for the suspension of the construction of the NPP “Belene”. . The claim amount was later increased. The decision to stop the construction of the second Bulgarian nuclear power plant was taken at the end of March 2012 by the first government of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

The “Belene” NPP saga has been going on for more than a quarter of a century. It started at the end of the communist era, but the construction of the nuclear plant was stopped after the beginning of changes in 1989-1990. At the beginning of the new millennium, a decision was made to restart the project. The auction was won by “Atomstroyexport”, which offers the construction of two VVER-1000 units at a base price for both of them just under 4 billion euros.

The project began to slip in 2009. The Bulgarian side sets new and new conditions to the Russian company – related to both the technical and financial side of the project, including finding a new foreign investor after the withdrawal of the German Air Ve E in the fall of 2009 d. The denouement occurred in March 2012, when official Sofia stopped the construction, after which “Atomstroyexport” filed a case in the International Arbitration.
