“We are not political chewing gum”: Builders protest in front of the National Assembly (photos)

The funds not paid by the state to the road construction companies this year are about BGN 800 million

After the demonstration of the business on Wednesday against the COVID measures, today workers from road construction companies are also gathering to protest in front of the parliament near the monument to Tsar Osvoboditel. Their dissatisfaction is due to unpaid salaries. People carry posters: “No way – no direction!”, “We are not political chewing gum”, “We want our money, we will not give up!”.

The protesters are wearing reflective vests.

The member of the Management Board of the Branch Chamber “Roads” Georgi Kyuchukov told journalists that the unpaid by the state funds to the road construction companies for the work done this year are about BGN 800 million. Workers said they had not been paid for between three and five months. Kyuchukov said at least 3,000 people, workers from road construction companies, are expected to join the protest.

The state has abdicated from the road construction industry for six months, there are no payments and it is clear whether there will be any at all, Kyuchukov said. The companies are also worried that it is not clear whether new construction works will be assigned.

Kyuchukov also said that there were even unpaid payments from last winter for road cleaning. He pointed out that contracts have been signed for current repairs and maintenance of the roads, but the regional ministry defines them as illegal. Whether the roads will be cleaned this winter will depend on the payments under these contracts, Kyuchukov added.

“We haven’t been paid for two months,” the yellow pavers told parliament. And they stressed that in front of the building with the inscription “Unity makes strength” they are not guided by politics, but by work and unreceived money. If they are not heard, people are threatening to come to the next protest with heavy machinery in front of parliament.

The Branch Chamber “Roads” wants payment of the accumulated obligations to the contractors of the road industry by the state, restoration of current assignments, maintenance of roads in acceptable operating condition, as well as a plan – program for development of the national road network.
