We are moving along the dangerous axis of discrimination – 2024-09-08 20:21:59

/ world today news/ The weekends were marked by large protests in the Bulgarian capital of the political parties Vazrazhdane and Left against the newly formed government of PPDB and GERB. And if most media covered this, as well as the blocking of a screening of a film from the “Sofia Pride Film Fest”, something else escaped Bulgarian journalism.

During the protests formed by the two political forces, a bar in the capital put the following sign on its window:

Whether in search of cheap social media publicity, or out of thoughtlessness, the message is beyond scandalous and very reminiscent of the ways in which the Nazi regime in Germany in the 1930s began to exclude German Jews from every aspect of public life in Germany.

For reference:

A sign at the entrance to a German village that reads: “The residents of the village do not wish to have contact with Jews.”

As well as another sign that reads: “Communication with Jews is prohibited in this village.”

Let’s not forget that Bulgaria is cited as an example by the international community, as it is one of the few European countries that managed to preserve its Jewish population during the Second World War. In the most difficult moments of our recent history, we have not allowed our society to be divided on such sensitive issues and we have even managed to stand up to Nazi Germany to save human lives.

At a moment when a certain part of the Bulgarian people begins to be stigmatized because of their political beliefs, this will be the beginning of an irreversible division that can lead to catastrophic consequences for our country.

And the owners of the aforementioned business can only be reminded that Article 21 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union prohibits discrimination based on any grounds and opinions, including political ones. Article 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights prohibits discrimination based on political beliefs and especially Article 6 para. 2 of the Bulgarian Constitution states that no restrictions on rights or privileges based on political affiliation are allowed.
