We are last in terms of life expectancy in the EU – 2024-05-03 16:03:37

The average life expectancy in the EU, according to preliminary data for 2023, was 81.5 years. This is 0.9 years more than 2022 and 0.2 more than 2019 – the year before the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Such are the data of the official European statistics Eurostat. According to this indicator, the Bulgarians are last, a very sad position in the union. Although our country has the third highest increase in life expectancy compared to 2019.

In 15 countries, life expectancy exceeded the European Union average, with the highest in Spain (84.0 years), Italy (83.8 years) and Malta (83.6 years).

In contrast, life expectancy was lowest in Bulgaria (75.8 years), Latvia (75.9) and Romania (76.6).

Compared to the level of 2019 (the last year before the Covid-19 pandemic), 18 EU countries experienced an increase in life expectancy in 2023, while 2 countries saw a stabilization and 6 member states recorded decline

The largest increase in life expectancy was recorded in Romania (an increase of 1 year), followed by Lithuania (by 0.8 years) and Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg and Malta (all of which had an increase of 0.7 years). Eurostat data also show.

The largest decline in life expectancy from the pre-pandemic level was seen in 2023 in Austria and Finland (down 0.4 years each), followed by Estonia and the Netherlands (down 0.2 years).
