“We are grateful for how people appropriated the song”

Being a prophet in one’s own land is not an easy thing, but many local groups and artists are achieving it, combining talent, creativity and sacrifice, as well as teamwork, professionalism and high quality in the final production.

One of the current examples is Purahéi Soul, the Paraguayan duo made up of Jennifer Hicks and Miguel Narváez. His recent topic, detachment, is being very well received by the national public, since its launch, currently exceeding one million views on YouTube, and reaching the tops of Spotify in Paraguay and Argentina. The video clip of the song, which shows landscapes and expressions of popular faith, alludes to the love that requires detachment and the memory of loved ones who have left.

“The truth is that the song was composed a few months before the pandemic. But we believe that art is there to serve. For this reason, once we release it, the song is no longer ours, but belongs to the people, so that they appropriate it, for what it is useful for, to heal, to cry, “says Jennifer Hicks, adding that in recording Pedro Martínez on guitar, Paula Rodríguez on bass, Gonzalo Resquín on percussions, and beats by Guti González and Marce Soler were used, and voices in backing vocals by Nico Vera and Susan Zaldívar.

At first, the first part of the song “sounded more like heartbreak,” says Hicks, and explains that later they gave it a “twist to focus on the process of letting go”, becoming a song of gratitude, “honoring that feeling that is difficult for us to face many times, which is detachment ”, he remarks.

“Although we did not know what was going to happen, we did not know everything that was coming, we are very grateful for the way, for how people took the song and appropriated it. We receive messages every day, from different parts of Paraguay and also from the world. Everything is very exciting. Art is precisely a way to express and transform feelings and the main objective is to heal and evolve, ”says Miguel Narváez.

REPERCUSSION. The artists comment that the song already has instrumental versions and in other languages. “The repercussion that the song had on the networks is impressive. We had planned to launch a challenge in networks, but before doing so we already received many versions; there are instrumental versions, in Nivaclé, in English, and by many boys and girls. We can’t really measure reach in networks anymore. And that the song is also on the tops of Spotify Paraguay, and now also on Spotify Argentina, it really seems incredible to us, it is the fruit of the work of our entire team, ”says Jennifer.

For his part, Miguel explains that the topic detachment It reflects the collaborative style of the work that they have been doing with the group of professionals, which they call “Bloque Guaraní”, and in which artists from various branches participate and mutually support each other.

“And precisely the name of the album is going to be that, Guarani block, as a way of thanking this multidisciplinary collaboration, which includes audiovisuals, clothing, fashion, makeup, theater, poetry ”, specifies the singer-songwriter.

This year, Purahéi Soul plans to release a couple more singles, to end with the new album, which is already finished. “The album is finished, but we are going to share it little by little so that people get to know the material, and discover what this album is about,” Jennifer ends.
