/ world today news/ And as the German poet Heinrich Heine rightly predicted: “where books burn, then people burn.” In today’s context, things would rather sound like this: where monuments are destroyed, then people are also destroyed. Just like in Ukraine.
In fact, thinking about what books to burn at all, as the last 30 years, quite a few books from home libraries have ended up in the dustbins, as we have all witnessed. If we still had a book here and there, and we hadn’t obligingly confused history in the textbooks, we might have known some obvious historical facts, so as not to expose ourselves later in our “rebellion”.
We would have realized that it is ridiculous – to organize art performances on a monument that has no relation to today’s events. To confuse historical periods and concepts.
To compare the Soviet Army with Putin and in general today’s capitalist Russia with the USSR. It is equally ridiculous to express support for Ukraine by vandalizing the symbol of the army in which many Ukrainians participated, who gave their lives to defeat Hitler and Nazism in the closing stages of the Second World War.
In the science of history, it is not disputed that the Red (Soviet) Army made the greatest contribution to the victory over the Third Reich and the liberation of Europe, to exist at all and to celebrate May 9 today as its holiday. Therefore, in many European capitals, as well as in Sofia, to this day, her monuments stand intact and in good condition.
It is a total misunderstanding and/or hypocrisy to condemn Hitler and at the same time write “Glory to Ukraine. I am a hero.” The shout, quite reminiscent of “Glory to Hitler! Victory to glory!” is linked to the Nazi Stepan Bandera, responsible for the cold-blooded slaughter of Poles, Russians and Jews in the most sadistic ways.
You know the tricks that are hidden in the fine print below the line. Thus, our freedom-lovers did not hold back and showed their true face low on the back of the monument, praising their idol Stepan Bandera – the murderer who was made a hero in Western Ukraine – with “Batko nas Bandera”.
Ordinary Ukrainian citizens fleeing the war do not need such pseudo-solidarity. “Putin is a murderer” can be chanted outside the Russian embassy. However, if some people really claim that they care about freedom and those suffering from wars around the world, and on this occasion they want to make demonstrations, then they will have to protest a lot in front of the American embassy.
Apparently The civil initiative to dismantle the monument to the Soviet army, organized the so-called art action on February 27, 2022, relying on the fact that “writing on the monument is not a crime” instills hatred and neo-Nazism and calls for the “cleansing” of people. While hiding behind the facade of romantic rebellion for peace and freedom. Aman from profane vandalism and from ordered and directed rebellion, which is not touched by any serious social problem of its people in the country. Those who in our country today incite and arm young people with sprays (far from creative purposes), tomorrow will start doing it with Molotov cocktails as well. Following the example of the people of Bandera, persecuting and burning people in Odessa in 2014.
Our compatriots should be aware that, at first glance, the apparently harmless war with monuments and the memory of recent events – paves the way for the revival and strengthening of fascism and its inhumane manifestations in various forms.
“We declare that from now on and until the upcoming dismantling of the monument, we will prevent any attempt to clean or repair the facility.” “We will return this occupied urban space to the Bulgarian children!”
Instead of the organizers wasting their enviable resolve on a witch hunt, let them protest against over-development, including on green parks and functioning playgrounds. So we would believe them that they care about the Bulgarian children.
The tendency will be more and more to build in the parks, precisely because the municipality, conveniently for someone’s business interests, is delaying to make and publicize the awaited Plan for the expropriation of private property in parks, gardens and grounds for other public activities – necessary for nurseries, gardens and schools. But our “fighters against the occupied urban space” have not been moved by this, we do not hear them insisting to their beloved regional mayor Traicho Traikov for new kindergartens and nurseries.
He, if nothing else, at least help wash the streets and sidewalks of Sofia, because… a lot of dirt, a lot of mud. Instead of talking to himself with monuments to soldiers who gave their lives to save Europe and memorial plaques to those killed by the royal police in 1943. students. Guilty of taking part in a peaceful march on the occasion of March 3, which the police dispersed with bullets, because of the ban on celebrating the holiday at that time by the royal authority. Sounds familiar right?
In such dark conditions, when whole peoples were trampled and children were killed with impunity, the European anti-fascist resistance was born. This leads to the capture of machine guns and the acceptance of the advancing Red Army as a liberator. Their infamous waving is next. After many sacrifices. And it is a sign of the victory over Nazism.
However, due to such blinded spitting on the soldier who picked up a machine gun after the end of the war, they fail to see the other two iconic figures of the monument. The sculptures of the worker and the mother with a child in her arms. It is no wonder that none of the so-called democrats notice them, because they simply do not care about them in real life either. In exactly the same way, in our current society ordinary workers, mothers, children remain unnoticed and neglected by the political elite. Priority words become only after elections. This is evidenced by the increasingly deteriorating working conditions, social inequality, ridiculous child benefits, the lack of accessible sports and cultural activities for children, the ruined health care, the trade in health, humiliating pay for nurses, etc. This list will get longer and longer, until we are offered, several times a year, the dismantling of a monument in the center of Sofia as a solution to all the problems.
If from The civil initiative to dismantle the monument are at all interested in the opinion of other citizens, because of course according to Bander theirs is the most right, they can take a look at the informal survey in the popular Facebook group “Spotted in Sofia”. This is how the answers to the question – should the Monument to the Soviet Army be removed?
„I don’t agree!” – 4540 votes
„I agree!” – 1496 votes
„I can’t judge!” – 89 votes
The conclusions are clear. The comment is redundant.
After on February 28, the monument to the Soviet Army was cleaned of the great protest art on it, let’s ask what’s next?
What is the next symbol of the past that suppresses our freedom – perhaps the NPC? Should we also expect an art performance on it, or will it simply be local to the Museum of Socialist Art.
Finally, let us recall the relevant words of Associate Professor Alexander Sivilov from Sofia University.
“When they try to rewrite history today, they do well to remember that the fashion now could have been different – a square-cut moustache, a slicked-back feather and a proudly outstretched hand salute, and all demi-humans have no right to life.” It is strange that people who declare themselves democrats cannot accept other people’s opinion and come to terms with their own past. The bad thing is that if, God forbid, the Monument to the Soviet Army disappears, if the aliens take it, suddenly a huge part of our political class and public elite will be left without a purpose and without any meaning in life. They should be happy that the man with the machine gun is standing in the center of Sofia, because otherwise they will have nothing to say about Bulgaria.”
