This can’t be a coincidence: Eleven people work at Winning Streak Games. Eleven! Just as much as being on the pitch in a football team. And then the We Are Football development studio also specializes in football managers. Naturally!

It is also no surprise that the overdue successor, We Are Football 2024, is now in the starting blocks, after all, Part 1 reached almost 4,000 simultaneous players on Steam in the summer of 2021. Driven by Anstoss inventor Gerald Köhler, the team from Winning Streak Games is now on the verge of repeating their success. And finally with 3D game scenes:

2:23 We Are Football 2024: We have an exciting penalty shootout in the cup

After the early access flop of Anstoss: The Football Manager, there is a lack of solid competition. Like its predecessor, We Are Football 2024 emphasizes the economic and management aspect of club management off the pitch; it is not a coaching simulation trimmed for realism like Sports Interactive’s Football Manager series. Hardly any other game currently takes on this genre, especially not at a comparable level of quality.

So, figuratively speaking, the ball is on the penalty (!) spot, and for the release in March 2024, the studio now only has to net and accept the homage of the primarily German fans of this very special type of football simulation.

GameStar Plus was able to talk to Gerald Köhler about his new game and try out the demo version of We Are Football 2024 exclusively before anyone else. Our conclusion: Rarely has there been a successor that fulfilled the fans’ wishes so precisely. But it’s also rare for a game to care so little about breaking out of its niche.

There are no original names in We Are Football 2024. The fans will get this after the release with data sets for download.

Football as it is: not pretty, but spectacular

“This is an important, significant step,” says Gerald Köhler when we ask him about the new 3D scenes in the 2024 version of We Are Football. The scenes are part of the match engine and can be displayed in a short or long version. Players can increase the pace, switch them off completely or watch the match from all possible angles thanks to optional slow motion and nine camera perspectives.

Our conversation partner: Gerald Köhler is co-founder and game designer at Winning Streak Games and played a key role in the development of Anstoss (Ascaron) and Soccer Manager (EA Sports). In 2021, at the head of a small team, he released We Are Football as a spiritual successor to the two classics, which was tailored to fast games and a mix of accessibility and realism.

However, it’s always just individual scenes and highlights; you won’t see a complete football game like in Football Manager in We Are Football. This is particularly noticeable with free kicks, which are often taken a few meters away from the scene of the foul. What already fits: What is shown is reminiscent of actual football. There are beautiful ball relays and remarkable passes into the depths, quick cross runs and powerful long-range shots.

Only the fouls are not animated, players simply cross the path and then one is on the ground. In general, graphics connoisseurs have to accept some compromises when it comes to appearance; the crowds of spectators swaying back and forth are even limited to two dimensions.
