Independence Path Kyrenia Regional Organization protested in Karşıyaka on the grounds of “drawing attention to the plunder of nature”.
According to the statement made by Independence Road, in the action held in the area known as “Gassi Hill” in Karşıyaka, the area in question was forest land until 2012, and then it was given to a person and a zoning permit was issued for the construction of 60 villas, and this was granted by the City Planning Department. It was argued that the approval was given.
Independence Road Kyrenia Officer Haydar Dolmacı, in his statement at the protest, reminded that similar permits were given to quarries and criticized the government’s attitude; “As if the destruction caused by quarries to nature was not enough, we are now seeing a different form of plunder under the name of planning permission,” he said.
Dolmacı stated that the floods and rocks falling from the mountains and falling on the roads are just a few examples of the disasters experienced on the island, which is located in a geography greatly affected by climate changes, and noted that if this plunder is not said “stop”, such disasters will increase even more.
Reminding that every tree cut down is an attack on the living spaces of animals, which are a part of nature, Dolmacı emphasized that environmental awareness is a requirement of being human.
Dolmacı said, “We do not recognize this zoning permit that you gave to make the capital fatter,” and emphasized that the forests belong to the people and the people are determined to protect their country; “We are here and we are determined to defend our forests against the insatiable capital and their supporters,” he said.
