We Are at a Critical Point for the Covid-19 Pandemic

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaWorld Health Organization (WHO) call the corona virus pandemic (Covid-19) growing exponentially. Exponential growth refers to an increase in the number of cases per day which is a factor of constant or approaching.

This indicates that the number of cases has exploded beyond expectations. “We are at a critical point in the pandemic,” said WHO Technical Chief Maria Van Kerkhove CNBC International, while speaking earlier this week.

He said this situation was not what his party imagined 16 months ago. Moreover, a number of control measures have been taken and vaccines have also been launched.

His statements are not without foundation. WHO noted that worldwide coronavirus cases rose 9%, the seventh consecutive weekly increase. The death rate also jumped 5%.

The weekly viral infection growth last week also crossed 4.4 million. “We need to check the reality of what we need to do … Vaccines and vaccinations are being carried out but not yet comprehensive in all parts of the world,” he said.

Previously, another WHO expert had given a warning, the Head of the Health Emergency Program Dr. Mike Ryan. He urged residents to keep wearing masks and apply social distancing rules while vaccinations are running.

“This virus is stronger, faster with the emergence of a new variant that spreads more easily and is more deadly than the original virus strain,” he said.

“We’re still struggling even though we know we’re sick of the tight lockdown.”

At least there are a number of countries that have experienced an increase in cases, such as India, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. Apart from starting to loosen up public health protocols, the increase is also due to viral mutations that cause new “more virulent” variants to appear.
