We are already at the beginning of the fourth wave of COVID-19 – 2024-04-24 09:16:53

“We are already at the beginning of the fourth wave of COVID-19. For a week, we have been noticing a continuous increase in the number of infected people. Fortunately, not at too fast a pace, but it is a fact that last week there was a day with over 300 infected. I predict we will go over 500 this week”. This was stated by associate professor Angel Kunchev in the studio of “Hello, Bulgaria” on Nova TV.

According to him, it is quite possible that in September there will be 3,000 infected per day. “Exactly how many will be infected and how quickly they will come depends on many factors, starting with the immunization rate, where we cannot boast of any successes and going through compliance with the measures, where we can even less boast of any successes. Unfortunately, we can also expect heavier than the possible options”, he commented.

Asked if some form of lockdown was being considered just for the unvaccinated, he commented: “From a medical point of view, it makes sense. The immunized are much more protected than the rest. However, from a purely social point of view, I avoid making comments, because society is very tired and not at all inclined to accept new restrictive measures. I assume that any administration, whatever it may be, will take this fact into account”.

“I would recommend new and severe restrictions only as a last resort, because the accumulated fatigue and desire for a normal life is very strong. However, if the curve is too steep, if we have 3000-4000 infected per day, it is not impossible to happen. Everything depends on the situation”, Kunchev also pointed out.

“The two-dose vaccine protects the recipient to a great extent. All the data on mortality and severity show that it works, and very well. 95-96% of people in intensive care units are unvaccinated,” he added. And he added that despite the fact that the vaccine reduces the possibility of getting infected and carrying the virus, the possibility of infection cannot be excluded.

When asked whether it is necessary to administer a third dose of vaccine to the first vaccinated, Angel Kunchev answered: “I think that this will happen in the fall, but it must happen after permission from the European Medicines Agency and a change in the summary of the vaccines.” I especially hope this happens with new updated vaccines that are tailored to the new variants. It is stipulated in Bulgaria’s contracts with the producers that this will happen in 2022 and 2023.
