‘We are afraid to celebrate New Year’s Eve at the border’: Kaliningrad truckers are at Lithuanian checkpoints again

Lithuanian customs officers slowly let the trucks through for the second week. What is happening at the border, Klops understood.

According to the Kaliningrad regional customs, on the morning of December 16, 330 cars were lined up to leave for Lithuania at the Chernyshevskoye checkpoint. There hadn’t been such a meeting for six months. There are 23 trucks in the neutral zone, which have been inspected by our customs officers. Lithuanian colleagues are working slowly.

In Belarus, the queues have accumulated the most over the past week: in Kotlovka there are 600 cars, in Kamenny Log – 1130. People wait from 4 to 9 days, says the driver Alexei.

“On Kybartai’s side there is a complete guide and already within it the wait is over 20 hours. At Medininkai – Kamenny Log from the Lithuanian side, a 9 km railway line. That’s another 8 days of waiting. At this rate, the Kaliningraders won’t go home before the holidays,” the man says.

According to him, before the holidays, the drivers try to leave with a margin to celebrate the New Year with their families.

“I understand that this is our job and we have chosen it, but we must remain people: why keep ourselves in the cold?” Alexis is indignant.

Another truck driver is loaded only in Moscow. Alexander will bring perishable groceries to Kaliningrad, but there is no certainty that he will arrive home by 31 December.

“I no longer have any mood. Maybe the authorities, the governor will somehow help in this situation? Alexander shares his hopes.

People fear that the queues will continue to grow and to return to the region by ferry, it is necessary to reserve seats several months in advance. Furthermore, according to the drivers, priority is given to those who transport sanctioned goods.
