In 1920 a citizen of the Landsgemeinde applied: “In the future, all music clubs in the canton that belong to the federal music association are to be involved alternately in the Fahrtsfeier and Landsgemeinde.” In the memorial, the district administrator describes the application as “of such a subordinate nature that the community should not have to deal with it”. The district administrator himself then commented on it in great detail.
In 1876 it was decided to have both the Fahrtsfest and the Landsgemeinde musically framed by the Glarus Harmoniemusik. A loan of 200 francs was granted for this, which was later increased to 400 francs. From 1891, the Harmoniemusik Glarus and the Harmoniemusik Näfels-Mollis regularly replaced each other in the “Music Service” on the journey, while the Harmoniemusik Glarus continued exclusively to participate in the Landsgemeinde.
Association membership is not yet a record of performance
The district administrator had no ear for the idea of including other music societies belonging to the Federal Music Association in the rotation. Membership in the association alone is not yet a “proof of the efficiency of a music society.” And it was feared that in addition to the music societies Schwanden and Tödi, societies from Ziegelbrücke or Engi that did not belong to the music association would also lay claim to participation in Fahrt and Landsgemeinde.
Good performance
The district administrator was satisfied with the two music societies that have been involved so far: “They have adequately proven themselves through their efficient achievements and their composition also guarantees adequate performance for the two patriotic events.” A change offers neither desirable guarantees nor does it correspond to a need. The claim to equal rights asserted by the applicant has equal performance as a prerequisite and this prerequisite cannot simply be considered to be present in all music societies in the canton. – A large majority of the Landsgemeinde followed the district administrator’s request for rejection.
And today?
The rules of 1891 still apply: The Landsgemeinde always plays Harmoniemusik Glarus.
