It’s almost impossible to be a cloud CEO giving a keynote speech and not focus the discussion around COVID-19. We analyze Satya Nadella’s keynote speech at Microsoft Ignite.
As the event right now is going to be virtual, caused by the pandemic and powered by the cloud, thoughts naturally turn to the obvious. They tend to be heading towards the “new normal” and what needs to change.
Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, presented your five step plan for the next generation of cloud innovation. Artificial intelligence, edge computing, and even the blockchain stood out to a great extent. “We need to fundamentally transform how the cloud can drive the next level of broad economic growth that we can all participate in. ”
This fits with a cloud theory driving the next wave of emerging technologies. Pat Gelsinger, recently appointed CEO of Intel, has a theory that technology describes a circular trend. The cloud can enable 5G, 5G creates more data, this data improves AI, and AI enables more cutting-edge use cases. This ultimately makes more use cases need more cloud. Seeing it as the cloud that powers all use cases, as Nadella does, is equally valid.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning fit very well in what has been said. “In the AI that we create, using all this enormous power of the cloud, we will seek increasing levels of predictive and analytical power, common sense reasoning, alignment with human preferences and, perhaps, increase human capacity. ”
This was part of a larger theme around “Sovereign data and environmental intelligence“, One of the five steps. “The volume, variety and speed of data will see explosive growth in the cloud and, in particular, in edge computing “. Nadella continued saying that “In this world, data will be more private and more sovereign.”
“We will develop new methods of machine learning to power the next generation of personalized services that preserve privacy.”
Ethical principles should govern the design, development, and deployment of AI. However, Nadella’s theory also takes into account how emerging technologies work best as a whole. Its first attribute was ubiquitous and decentralized computing. For her, the cloud and edge computing will evolve to meet her demands.
Another technology that Microsoft seems to bet on as an option in the cloud is the mixed reality. Perhaps his most striking advertisement on Ignite was his Mesh mixed reality collaboration platform. This allows people in different physical locations to join collaborative and shared holographic experiences across multiple devices.
One of the important announcements was that of Azure Percept which comes to a public preview. Your goal is provide customers with a single end-to-end system to maximize opportunities.
Microsoft also released industry clouds for finance, manufacturing, and nonprofits last month. However, Along with this, it announced a public preview roadmap for Microsoft Cloud for Retail.
Nadella also spoke of “confidence in design” as another pillar of innovation. “Basically, a technology provider should be successful only when it helps the world around to succeed”. “Nobody wants to create technology that expands quickly but breaks the world around us. No customer wants to depend on a supplier that sells them technology on the one hand and competes with them on the other ”.
