There are people who claim that Wayne Rooney – the Wayne Rooney who shone at the 2004 European Championship or was initially considered to be even more promising than Cristiano Ronaldo – never became the player he could have become. Five English championships alone and the 2008 Champions League victory with Manchester United should comfort Rooney.
Perhaps the 35-year-old Everton FC trained just turned out to be a different player than what these people expected. A player who played deeper and more variably than the goalscorer he once was – and who he must have stayed anyway. Because no one scored more often for the Red Devils (253 times) and the English national team (53 times).
