Wayne Rooney retires – and becomes Derby County’s coach

After several titles and even more goals, Wayne Rooney (35) ended his illustrious playing career – to immediately start a career as a coach.

There are people who claim that Wayne Rooney – the Wayne Rooney who shone at the 2004 European Championship or was initially considered to be even more promising than Cristiano Ronaldo – never became the player he could have become. Five English championships alone and the 2008 Champions League victory with Manchester United should comfort Rooney.

Perhaps the 35-year-old Everton FC trained just turned out to be a different player than what these people expected. A player who played deeper and more variably than the goalscorer he once was – and who he must have stayed anyway. Because no one scored more often for the Red Devils (253 times) and the English national team (53 times).

Sheikh Khaled should take over: Derby has sporting and financial problems

For a boxer’s son, after the game is before the game: the player, or rather the player-coach, is now the coach Rooney. The Liverpool-born player had already taken over as interim coach at Derby County in November – now, after the end of his active career, the English second division team installed him as the new head coach.

Rooney signed with the third-bottom of the championship for two and a half years, who is currently also having financial problems – several employees are waiting while Sheikh Khaled, a cousin of Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour, is supposed to take over the club, still on her December salary. “Despite other offers, I knew Derby was the right place for me,” said Rooney nonetheless. “I will turn every stone.”
