Wayne Rooney has been fired after fifteen games as coach of the English second division club Birmingham City, where he was appointed in October.

The adventure of the former striker of United, among others, could hardly be called successful. Since his appointment in October, Rooney has managed just two wins. Birmingham were sixth in the Championship when he started, the club has since dropped to 20th.

On the club website, Birmingham provides explanations for the dismissal: “Despite their best efforts, the results have not met the expectations that were made clear from the outset. Therefore, the board believes that a change in management is in the best interests of the football club is.”

Birmingham lost 3-0 to Leeds United on Monday, after which supporters called for the departure of 38-year-old Rooney.

The Championship club was taken over last summer by a company owned by American businessman Tom Wagner, who dismissed popular coach John Eustace. Eustace was in charge of the club for 15 months and saved the club from relegation during that period.

Rooney previously coached DC United, where he left in October after failing to reach the play-offs with that club. Before that, the Liverpool-born United icon had already been a trainer at Derby County.
