Wayforward Machine shows a dystopian future for the internet

This year, the Internet Archive celebrates 25 years and does so by looking in the orb with one Wayforward Machine which allows visitors to see what the internet of the future may look like. Something that was first noticed by Engadget.

Enter any address in the Wayforward Machine and it will appear covered by pop-up menus with messages such as “classified content”, “you are trying to reach outside the firewall”, “please log in biometrically” or “the content on this site is classified as a thought violation ”.

The Internet Archives Wayforward Machine paints the picture of a much more limited internet that could become a reality in the future depending on what happens. According to the Internet Archive, this could be, for example, things like Section 230 in the US being removed, companies being able to trademark facts and more countries acquiring their own variants of China’s firewall.

Wayforward Machine is a collaboration between the Internet Archive, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Fight for the Future and Wikimedia Foundation. The site also contains resources for visitors that can help protect free information on the internet.
