Cubans are taking refuge while various parts of the capital report constant shootings. The situation is so serious that the residents themselves have had to move to smaller towns to avoid the danger of being caught in the middle of a possible confrontation between criminal gangs.
The suspension of flights began last Thursday, when a plane bound for Cuba was about to take off from ‘Toussaint Louverture’ Airport and was hit by multiple bullets during a shootout. No passengers were injured, but the flight was canceled and other air operations at the terminal were suspended until further notice.
According to media from the Dominican Republic, a neighboring territory of Haiti, measures have been taken to prevent the passage of Haitian citizens across the border, after violence increased over the weekend.
In that sense, they indicated that one of the criminal gangs entered the largest prison in Haiti and freed thousands of inmates. The incident occurred at the Port-au-Prince National Penitentiary, which housed about 4,000 prisoners, of whom only about 100 remained.
