Wave of Cyberattacks Hits Switzerland, Companies Reluctant to Take Out Insurance

The wave of cyberattacks hitting Switzerland is not slowing down. In recent days, the Swiss Air Force has had documents stolen. The World Council of Churches was attacked by extortion software (ransomware), as was the city of Baden. Faced with this surge, companies seem reluctant to take out insurance. In mid-December, the Swiss Insurance Association (ASA) affirmed, on the basis of a survey, that only 7% of Swiss companies are insured against cyberattacks. According to the ASA, more than 46,000 companies and 292,000 private customers paid a total of 108 million in cyber insurance premiums for 2022.

All these numbers are expected to increase. Recall that very recently a survey commissioned by the World Economic Forum (WEF), as part of its “Global Risks Report 2024”, indicated that 39% of respondents believed that cyberattacks should represent a considerable risk this year. “The gap between organizations capable of making themselves cyber resilient and those that are not continues to widen,” warned the WEF.
