More than 90 people were arrested last night after far-right demonstrations turned into riots in towns and cities across Britain, the BBC reports.
Bottles were thrown, shops looted and police officers attacked in Hull, Liverpool, Bristol, Manchester, Blackpool and Belfast. In some places, the protests were peaceful. The Prime Minister promised to give the police force the full support of the government to take action against the extremists who are trying to sow hatred.
Tensions have flared in the country since the murder of three young girls at a dance party in Southport.
There were clashes between demonstrators and the police in Liverpool. Protesters attacked the police with bottles and torches. There are several injured police officers. Protesters set fire to a local library. A number of shops were also robbed. 23 demonstrators were detained.
The government spokesman said the right to freedom of expression and violent disorder are two very different things. There is no excuse for violence of any kind. The government supports the police to take whatever action is necessary to keep the streets safe, he added.
In Bristol there was a protest and a counter-protest. Avon and Somerset Police arrested 14 demonstrators. There were clashes with the police in Manchester. At least two people have been detained. Two are also detained in Belfast.
In Hull, protesters smashed a window of a hotel used to house refugees.
Humberside Police said three officers were injured and 20 people arrested after disturbances in the town centre.
20 were also detained in the riots in Blackpool, Blackburn and Preston. In Stoke, demonstrators pelted the forces of the order with bricks. Three police officers were injured. Ten people have been detained. Leicestershire Police arrested two people in Leicester city centre.
Not all demonstrations in the UK turned violent. Dozens of anti-Islam protests are planned this weekend.
