Jakarta, Beritasatu.com – Phenomenon time travel or time travel has always been a hot topic that sparks heated debate among scientists and the lay public. However, recently, a ground-breaking physics theory has been formulated by a group of physicists from Tampere University, Finland, that shakes the foundations of our understanding of time travel.

So far, time travel is usually explained by Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. However, this trio of physicists managed to challenge this understanding with an extraordinary discovery. They discovered a potential solution to the time travel problem by reconsidering basic principles regarding the movement of light waves through one-dimensional time and space.

Quoted ScienealertSaturday (28/10/2023) the main author of this study, Matias Koivurova, explained, “Basically I found a very neat way to derive the standard wave equation in 1+1 dimensions. The only assumption I needed was that the wave speed is constant. Then I thought: what if the wave speed is not always constant? This turned out to be a very good question.”

In physics, the speed of light or “c” in shorthand, is considered the universal limit for information traveling in a vacuum. The special theory of relativity states that these basic properties cannot actually change, although matter can effectively slow the particles’ travel.

However, Matias and his colleagues, Charles Robson and Marco Ornigotti, decided to set aside this truth to consider the consequences of the standard wave equation in which the changing speed of light waves could be accelerated. Initially, their solution looks implausible, but when they reinstate constant velocity as a frame of reference, everything starts to look reasonable.

The upshot is that this solution has major implications for the debate surrounding whether the momentum of light waves increases or decreases when passing through a new medium. Matias explains, “What we have shown from the wave’s point of view, nothing happens to its momentum. In other words, the wave’s momentum is conserved.”

This means that, regardless of the type of wave, whether in an electromagnetic field, ripples in a pond, or vibrations on a string, the concepts of relativity and conservation of momentum must still be taken into account as speed increases. This generalization has interesting, if slightly disappointing, consequences.

So what do these findings mean in the context of time travel? Matias and his colleagues argued that if all waves follow precise changes in time according to the theory of relativity, then the physics governed by waves must have a rigid temporal direction. This means that time travel is impossible in one direction.

However, keep in mind that this equation has only been solved for one dimension of space and time. Further experiments are needed to test whether this wave perspective is true. If these findings prove correct, then the time travel phenomenon that is often the subject of fantasy may be just an illusion, and our journey across the universe is actually a one-way journey.
