Waterreus ‘grateful’: ‘Have to become champion in Eindhoven against that Ajax’

Ronald Waterreus sees that the whole Eredivisie benefits from the good performance of Ajax in the Champions League. The former goalkeeper of PSV sees the other Dutch top clubs rise to the level of the team from Amsterdam.

“Although Ajax does it in the Champions League and those other clubs at a significantly lower level, progress has certainly been made at several clubs,” Waterreus told IPS. Ziggo Sports about the European performances of PSV, Feyenoord, AZ and Speed. “And we are all really benefiting from that now.”

According to Waterreus, the other clubs can be grateful to Ajax. “Yes, certainly. Ajax won the Champions League in 1995. If we wanted to become champions in Eindhoven then, we had to become champions against Ajax that had won the Champions League. So that means that you have to get to that level yourself, otherwise you will not get there. That now applies to the other clubs.”

“I also think that you see something of that in how European games are played,” continues the seven-time international. “I think Vitesse is perhaps the best example of this. They really hold their own against clubs like Spurs and Rennes. That is very clever.”
