Watermelons that smell like acetone and contain acetone. Such a signal was published by users on social networks. The Food Agency begins an investigation into the case.
It all started with a post on Facebook by actress Vesla Babinova. She told of a two-year-old boy and his father, a family of her relative, who consumed watermelon from this metropolitan market.
A little later, brown spots appear on the child’s legs. The family sees a doctor, and the concern is that the summer fruit contains acetone.
The Food Agency is investigating the case. It was established that the watermelon was part of a batch imported into the EU from a third country, and the importer was also clarified. The remaining quantities are suspended until the inspection is completed.
According to the actress Vesela Babinova, the watermelon was bought from a capital market for BGN 20. When the merchant was spoken to, he denied that there was a problem and that anyone had complained.
“Many people contacted me and one mother asked me – why did her child also have such things on her legs and what should she do? What should I answer her? This is an absurd situation,” explained the actress.
Today we are going to the said market. People say they buy watermelon less often because they think it’s too early.
“I bought a week ago, it’s like eating sponge cake, that’s how it tastes,” says one shopper.
“Samples have been taken for laboratory analysis. They will be examined in an accredited laboratory for residues of pesticides, heavy metals, and a microbiological examination will be carried out,” said the BABH.
The use of acetone is dangerous and the reaction depends on the amount taken, says pediatrician Dr. Yaneva.
“It can be accompanied by complaints of abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, lethargy of the child, even if the intoxication is severe, it can also be associated with drowsiness or loss of consciousness, regulation of liver and kidney function. I emphasize again that this depends on the dose that was taken and the age and weight of the child,” said Dr. Natasha Yaneva, pediatrician at SBAL for children’s diseases, “prof. Ivan Mitev”.
Doctors advise parents to be careful with what food they give their children, and if there is even the slightest doubt, to consult a pediatrician or toxicologist. And the relatives of the actress Vesela Babinova are now better.
