On August 6, local time, the World Swimming Federation (FINA) stated that due to the pollution of the Seine River, the water quality was below acceptable standards. The water 10km race was canceled. FINA stated that they will continue to work with the Paris Olympic Organizing Committee and the Paris government to ensure that contingency plans are in place during next year’s Olympic Games.

On August 4, local time, the training part of the Paris Olympic swimming test competition was canceled for the same reason. The competition on the 5th was also postponed to the 6th. Since the water quality was still not up to standard, the test event was eventually cancelled.

The Paris Olympic Organizing Committee issued a statement saying that the continuous heavy rain in Paris this week caused the sewer to backflow, which in turn polluted the Seine River. The Paris Olympic Organizing Committee and the Paris city government said that this situation will not happen again during the Olympic Games, because Paris is building large cisterns to store rainwater to prevent this from happening. At the same time, the Paris Olympic Organizing Committee stated that it will increase the intensity of a number of measures to enhance the protection of the Olympic open water competitions.
