Water pill can significantly reduce complaints in children with autism

Scientists at the UMC in Amsterdam can use brain videos to determine which children with autism need medication. In addition to brain videos, so-called EEGs, a calculation method is used to investigate the stimulus processing in the brain. This is reported by the NOS.

Until now, children diagnosed with autism may be prescribed medication, such as Ritalin. This mainly happens with problematic behavior at home or with problems at school. However, such drugs do not cure the ailment, but suppress it. There are also sometimes serious side effects.

Too much chlorine in the brain

Some of the children with autism have too high a chlorine level in the brain. This disrupts the processing of incoming stimuli. If these patients use a water pill (bumetanide), the chlorine level in the brain decreases and the complaints are reduced, sometimes considerably.

This treatment can be used not only for children with autism, but also for dyslexia and ADHD. In those cases, the brain cannot process the stimuli properly.

Dealing better with the outside world

The water pill works in ten to twenty percent of children with autism. However, the children are not cured of autism by means of this pill. However, this medication allows them to deal with the outside world better and they become more flexible.

However, not every child benefits from a water pill. In addition to the water pill, there are many other drugs that affect the brain. The right medicine always depends on the cause.
