On Friday afternoon, a number of residents in Holmen were notified via text message from the municipality’s water and sewage department.
– We will work on the water main in Glommens Gate. This means that the water will be closed on Monday 13 November 2023 from 08.00 to 15.00, the message says.
People are asked to bottle the necessary water for the period.
– The water can become slightly discolored and the pressure reduced and possibly completely gone for periods. We recommend rinsing with cold water and cleaning the strainers at the tap points when the water is back, it says.
The boss explains
Fredriksstad Blad contacted chief engineer Tom Arild Hodt on Wednesday, and asked why digging was taking place in Glommens gate. We learned that it was about a leak at the junction Glommens gate/Holmegaten.
Not a case to write about, we thought in the editorial office. But the incident has since developed, and concerns many more.
When an attempt was made to stop the leak, it turned out that the shut-off valve had been damaged by the ravages of time. The facility here is around 100 years old.
– We then dug down to a shut-off valve further up Glommens gate. But it turned out to be in just as bad shape. We stopped the leak, and no households are now without water. But it is therefore necessary to do a bigger job in the area, which is why we are going out with this information, says Hodt.
Working on a project
– The problems do not come as a surprise. This whole part of Holmen has an old and very poor facility. We are currently designing a completely new facility, which includes, among other things, a new culvert. This is a large and complicated job, where we see everything in context. But when acute leaks occur like here, we of course have to repair the damage, even if we are going back to build a completely new facility, says Hodt.
