The curator of the festival, Werner Zanotti, stated that the purpose of the festival is to allow artists to express themselves about environmental problems. “The whole world is talking about sustainability. The whole world is talking about global warming. I think it’s very important that artists have the opportunity to express themselves, and artists express themselves through light installations. That’s the message that the water light festival wants to send,” Zanotti said.
The time of the festival was not chosen by chance, because the United Nations Organization (UN) has declared May 16 as the International Day of Light in honor of the discovery of the laser principle. Such a device is used in a show at the bishop’s residence, while another installation synchronizes the movements of people and light fixtures.
Among the 47 works there is also a plastic reef, a representation of the moon and a play of mysterious lights at the confluence of two rivers.
The devastating war in Ukraine continues, so a lot of attention is devoted to the symbolic work of Yulia Shamsheyeva, a representative of this country, about beauty and its dangers. The project is said to be about the endless fragile loop of life and reminds that people should be responsible for nature. The surveyed visitors also acknowledged that art gives a different and visually powerful message about this current problem in the modern world.
