Water is the future
It’s a river of superlatives. The Colorado River originates in the Rocky Mountains and flows through the famous Grand Canyon. But in Mexico, where the river has flowed into the sea for thousands of years, hardly a drop of water reaches it. The estuary has been dry for decades, a desert landscape. The water needs of the people in the Colorado watershed are too great. Given the lack of water, what Mexican and American environmentalists are planning seems daring: the Colorado estuary should have water again and become green again. The challenges are great. For 15 years, it has snowed and rained less than before in the Colorado headwaters in the Rocky Mountains. The water level in Lake Mead, one of the largest reservoirs in the United States, is declining. As a result, the city of Las Vegas needs to conserve water. The sumptuous desert metropolis has transformed into a city of exemplary character: it uses less and less water, even as its population is increasing. It’s different in Arizona: around the city of Yuma, billions of gallons of water from Colorado continue to flow into the desert to supply the US with lettuce and vegetables. The fourth part of the documentary series accompanies people in the United States whose lives are closely related to the water of the famous river. It shows water police officers and desert gardeners in Las Vegas encouraging residents to use the precious water consciously. It follows farmers in the Arizona desert and creative conservationists in the spectacular Colorado Delta. His story shows that a barren landscape can flourish again when man returns some of its water to the river.
