Water Crisis in Morne Pitault Neighborhood: Residents Forced to Buy Cisterns and Plastic Bottles as Odyssi Fails to Resolve the Problem

Regularly deprived of running water since 2020, residents of the Morne Pitault neighborhood in Le Lamentin have been reduced to buying cisterns and plastic bottles. Water management company, Odyssi is slow to solve the problem.

“It’s getting really painful to live with”, whispers DS into the receiver of his telephone. For 10 days, this resident of the Morne-Pitault neighborhood in Le Lamentin has been without running water. She preferred to remain anonymous.

As with around fifty of her neighbours, she estimates, the water only comes out of the taps for a few hours a day, and this systematically in the middle of the night.

The problem is long-standing. According to DS, the water cuts would have “closer and intensified from 2020”.

Last year, residents even launched a petition. 34 days without water in six months, they had counted for the occasion.

“We have elderly or vulnerable neighbors who cannot afford to go and buy and carry bottled water”deplores our witness.

For the latter, solidarity residents install cisterns. An additional cost to which must be added the money evaporated in the water bills (those continue to fall) as well as plumbing costs.

“With each return of water, the pressure is so strong that it damages our devices”effectively explains DS, before adding that “most meters are also stopped for this reason”.

To solve this inconvenience, the water management company Odyssi suggested to its subscribers to install pressure reducers, reports DS again.

But the inhabitants are waiting for real solutions. If Odyssi maintains the dialogue, in particular via a WhatsApp conversation, the company has not yet initiated any real changes. Work was launched in November 2022 but ultimately did not improve the situation.

To the complaints sent by subscribers on the whatsApp group in recent days, the director of Oyssi responded this morning (July 19), ie 10 days after the start of this umpteenth water cut.

In his message, Judes Christine promises the arrival of “permanent solutions”Who “should in the future develop very favorably the regular water supply in these sectors”. Regarding the current cut, a “back to normal should be done tomorrow during the day”.

Solicited by Martinique the 1st, the services of Odyssi have not yet responded.
