With the Apple Watch, users can already track their sleep patterns. However, at WWDC 2021, Apple has announced a major update to its smart watches with watchOS 8 and one of the new features we can look forward to, namely tracking sleep respiration rate. This is a measure of the number of breaths we take per minute.
According to Apple, “To do this, the Apple Watch uses the built-in accelerometer to measure your breathing rate while you sleep, and this information can be viewed, along with trends over time, in the iPhone Health app.” So why is this important? Why should we measure the number of breaths we take per minute while we sleep?
Well, if you ever woke up more tired than you were when you went to bed or if you had high blood pressure, one of the reasons could be caused by what is known as obstructive sleep apnea. By measuring the number of breaths you have per minute, you may be able to get an idea of what is wrong.
You can even take these results and show them to a doctor who may do additional tests to see if you suffer from this condition, and rapid detection could help prevent further complications. This will be part of the watchOS 8 update that is expected to be released later this year.
