Watching Movies in the Apple Vision Pro: A Review

In the world of technology, innovation never ceases to amaze us. The latest addition to the tech world is the Apple Vision Pro, a groundbreaking headset that promises to transform the way we watch movies. Priced at $3,500, this device offers a variety of ways to experience our favorite TV shows and films. Intrigued by its potential, I decided to put it to the test and see if it lives up to the hype.

Finding the perfect spot to enjoy a movie is crucial, and with the Vision Pro, the possibilities are endless. As long as you have a WiFi connection, you can watch a movie anywhere. Naturally, I gravitated towards my bed for my first experience. It was almost as cozy as I had imagined, but there was a sense of isolation watching something alone instead of with my boyfriend. However, I found that wearing the Vision Pro allowed me to find a comfortable position and stay there throughout the movie, eliminating the usual fidgeting and turning over I do when watching TV. The only drawback was having to readjust the headset to keep the screen in my line of sight.

As time went on, the initial coziness wore off, and the weight of the Vision Pro started to make laying down feel awkward. Weighing in at 22.9 ounces, the headset isn’t exactly comfortable after a few hours of use. However, I discovered that supporting my neck with a pillow helped alleviate some of the discomfort. Watching in my living room proved to be trickier than in the bedroom due to the weight of the device. Sitting up for over 90 minutes became nearly impossible, making it more suitable for shorter episodes rather than lengthy films. Eventually, I resorted to laying back on my couch for extra neck support, but the bright display inches from my eyes was still a distraction.

Despite these minor inconveniences, I felt fine after watching a movie or a couple of 45-minute show episodes. However, I couldn’t indulge in a movie marathon or binge hour-long episodes as I normally would on my TV. One major drawback is that most streaming services do not have an app for the Vision Pro. While some sites can be accessed through Safari, others prompt you to watch on your phone or tablet. This limitation restricts the full potential of the device and leaves room for improvement.

One of the standout features of the Vision Pro is its ability to create an immersive viewing experience. Inside the headset, you can bring your windows close up to your eyes or watch from across the room. For my movies, I opted for a distance somewhere in the middle. Despite having a 55-inch 4K smart TV, I decided to go big and project a jumbotron-like screen onto my ceiling. Surprisingly, the quality of the Vision Pro’s micro-OLED screen didn’t differ much from my 4K TV. The visuals were crisp and clear, providing an enjoyable viewing experience.

However, there were some limitations when it came to snacking and drinking while wearing the headset. The device felt like ski goggles, forcing me to physically turn my head to see my bowl of popcorn instead of just glancing at it. Additionally, I was surprised when my glass audibly clinked against the front of the Vision Pro as I took a sip. While it didn’t hinder me from enjoying a drink, its presence was definitely felt.

One of the most impressive aspects of the Vision Pro is its ability to transport you to different environments. Whether you want to watch a film in a dark theater or a forest at night, the device creates an immersive experience regardless of the real-world lighting conditions. This feature allowed me to escape from the world around me and enjoy a movie in a completely different setting. It was also convenient to be able to step out of these environments and interact with the people around me. Who knew I needed to watch a movie from the side of a lake with the starry sky above me? It has become my favorite way to have some much-needed alone time.

In conclusion, the Apple Vision Pro offers a unique and immersive movie-watching experience. While it has its limitations, such as discomfort after extended use and the lack of streaming service apps, it still manages to impress with its visual quality and ability to transport you to different environments. If you’re a movie enthusiast looking for a new way to enjoy your favorite films, the Vision Pro might just be the device for you.
