Watched Q950TS: Samsung’s almost frameless 8K TV makes waves

Shortly before the start of the electronics trade fair CES 2020, Samsung new 8K televisions introduced, The most interesting model is the Q950TS: The top model of the new 8K series has an almost frameless design. According to Samsung, the screen of the Q950TS covers almost 99 percent of the front of the TV; The frame is barely noticeable on the left, right and top, especially in dark surroundings, at the bottom it is a little wider. There, too, the frame is narrower than with other TVs. Samsung calls the new screen Infinity Screen.

There was already before CES 2020 speculationthat Samsung could show such a device at the fair. According to these rumors, there were also critical voices in Samsung’s display department that spoke of deteriorated stability due to the narrow frame. Another problem is evident with the devices that Samsung is showing at the trade fair.

Clear waves can be seen on the display panel in the edge area of the TVs on display, which are obviously inevitable due to the special frameless construction. If we look at the Q950TS from the front, the waves are not necessarily visible; As soon as the television picture is a little darker and light is reflected at the right angle, the uneven panel can be seen immediately.

Thin housing with a flat back

The Q950TS is only 15 mm thick with a diagonal of 75 inches. In addition, unlike other devices, the television has no bulge on the back. This allows it to be hung flat on a wall.

The Q950TS has an improved Quantum 8K processor. This should enable even better AI upscaling of low-resolution images. According to its own information, Samsung is also working with Amazon on AI Scalenet: The new compression should enable high image quality even with a slower internet connection.

The Q950TS has speakers built into the frame on each side, and a number of woofers are installed on the back. This creates a virtual 5.1 sound. Object Tracking Sound + should recognize the movement of objects in the image and place the sound accordingly in virtual space. The Active Voice Amplifier function is intended to increase the volume of voices when ambient noise is too loud. Thanks to Q-Symphony, the speakers built into the TV can also be used when a Q-Soundbar is connected.

Samsung has not yet announced a release date and price for the Q950TS.
