The Ursid meteor shower is active from December 16 to 26
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) said the public can watch to rain meteor Ursid with maximum intensity on December 23, 2022.
“This meteor shower was active from December 16 to 26 and had a maximum intensity of 10 meteors per hour at its zenith on December 23,” BRIN Space Research Center researcher Andi Prince said in a written statement, Wednesday. (12/14/2022).
Andy said meteor shower it looks best when viewed from the northern hemisphere. For areas located more than five degrees south latitude, the meteor shower cannot be observed.
Meteor intensity from Kendari to Sabang varies between 1-3 meteors/hour due to the height of the radiant point just before sunrise between 5-16 degrees above the northern horizon.
The meteor shower can be observed from the north from December 23 at 01:00 local time until just before sun. The geocentric velocity of the meteor is 118,800 km/h. The meteor came from the remains of comet 8P/Tuttle.
Andi mentions the meteor shower Urs undisturbed by the interference of natural light from the Moon. The public can observe the meteor shower without the aid of optical aids or simply with the naked eye.
If you want to record or photograph this phenomenon, you can use a DSLR camera or an all-sky camera with a 180-degree field of view.
In addition, the public can also witness the December Leonis Minorid meteor shower, which was active from December 4, 2022 to February 4, 2023.
The December Leonis Minorid meteor shower will peak in intensity of five meteors per hour at its zenith on December 20, 2022.
This meteor shower can be seen across Indonesia from the northeast around midnight on December 19 until vanishing in the north before dawn on December 20, 2022.
The meteor shower comes from the remains of comet C/1739 K1 (Zanotti) and has a geocentric speed of up to 230,400 km/h.
