Watch! ‘The Coco’nuts’ new video invites you to look into the darkest corners of the mind

On Wednesday, December 1, The Coco’nuts released a song and music video for “Getting Dark,” which turns an ordinary train ride into an adventure. The video, with its contemporary dance, music and strong visual language, reflects a variety of feelings that tend to strike people in the darkest corners of their minds, the group said.

“We never know what’s going on in the other person’s head. Someone on the side may look calm and happy, but there may be a whole storm in his mind at the time,” says Paul Petersone, the video’s director. “As we accumulate emotions and experiences, many of us experience anxiety and panic attacks. We try to ignore the negative, stifle it, and continue to live as usual. However, the more we avoid it and pretend that everything is fine, the worse it stays. “We burn out or break, and everything that has been hidden for so long comes out. It was at this explosive moment of breaking that we tried to show a video.

The main role is played by dancer and movement artist Marģers Vanags, who in two days of making the video had to go through several experiences and four elements – both to sink underwater and be buried in the peat fields, and to stand on the head of a moving train and look into the burning statue.

The song has been composed in two stages: its beginning, closing words and singing appeared already in 2014, when the vocalist Marija Valmiera and the backing vocalist Montu Kurmi searched for words to express their current feelings. The verses were made now, when the idea of the song was relaunched in the new album. “It has often happened that I write the text and it only takes its place after a while. It was a couple of years ago that I thought that this world was like that – seemingly funny. This song is about chaos in the emotional world, about the desire to fit into society, “You are ready to do everything, although it may mean too much! It is worth remembering that we are not alone in these feelings. Above all, the story is about humanity, the desire to seek solutions and accept yourself,” says Mary in the song.

“Samples of Darkness” are taken from the house of drummer Arthur’s mother – fallen apples, firewood, screw-filled cans and greenhouses. The composition of this song also sings in a joint choir, which was not previously a noticeable phenomenon in the group’s compositions, but will be a characteristic feature of the upcoming album. This is the third single from The Coco’nuts’ upcoming studio album Forward Back, which will be released in spring 2022.

The video was created by a creative team together with video artist and cameraman Daniel Weiss, directed by Paul Petersone, produced by Anna Petersone, and mixed and mastered by Tom Lisments.

The artists at The Coco’nuts have found inspiration in the funk and poison of music, blues and jazz. Improvisation, energy and friendship created the core of the group and its mechanism of action. The band started in 2012. The band has performed at a number of local and foreign festivals and events. In November 2019, the band represented Latvia at the China-Central and Eastern European (CEE) Music Week in Chengdu, China. This autumn, the band represented Latvia at the Tallinn Music Week festival in Estonia.
