Watch SpaceX launch communication satellite for North America’s enhanced connectivity

SpaceX is gearing up for another exciting launch as they plan to send a communications satellite into orbit on Thursday, August 3. The launch will be live-streamed for viewers to watch the action unfold.

The Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to take off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida during a two-hour launch window that begins at 12:15 a.m. ET. In case of any delays, a backup window is also scheduled for the same time on Friday, August 4.

This particular Falcon 9 first-stage booster has an impressive track record, as it will be embarking on its sixth launch. It previously flew the Crew-5 astronaut mission to the International Space Station. After stage separation during the mission, the booster will make its way back to Earth and land on SpaceX’s Just Read the Instructions droneship in the Atlantic Ocean.

The payload for this mission is the Galaxy 37/Horizons-4 communications satellite, a joint operation between Intelsat and JSAT International. Built by Maxar, this satellite will expand television and telecommunications access for North America. Additionally, it will help free up airwaves for the advancement of 5G wireless communications service.

The Falcon 9 will place the satellite into a geosynchronous transfer orbit, which is an elliptical orbit around 23,000 miles above Earth. This orbit serves as an intermediate step before reaching geosynchronous orbit, where a spacecraft remains over the same location on Earth.

This launch will mark a significant milestone for SpaceX, as it will be their 251st total launch and the 51st mission of the year so far. Just recently, the company successfully launched its heavy-lift Falcon Heavy for the seventh time, deploying the largest and heaviest geostationary communication satellite ever launched into orbit.

While the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy are currently the only operational rockets in SpaceX’s fleet, the company is actively working on its ambitious Starship project. Starship, the largest and most powerful launch vehicle ever built, has only been launched once in its fully-stacked configuration atop a Super Heavy booster. Unfortunately, the test flight ended in an explosion on April 20.

Space enthusiasts can tune in to watch the launch and landing live on SpaceX’s website, starting at 12 a.m. ET. This exciting event promises to showcase the incredible advancements in space technology and the ongoing efforts to expand communication capabilities.
