WATCH: Rover Perseverance successfully takes first rock sample on Mars, how does that get to Earth for research?

In July of 2026, the so-called Sample Retrievel Lander will be launched, roughly translated: the sample collector. That rover will land on Mars by August 2028 and must collect the various samples taken by the other Mars rovers.

A special robotic arm on that lander will load everything into the Mars Ascent Vehicle, roughly translated: the Mars launch vehicle. All the samples together will be in a box about the size of a basketball. They will be launched into orbit around Mars in the spring of 2029.
