This weekend three people fell victim to “Whaling” via WhatsApp in the Limburg Regio Capital police zone. “Whaling” is a form of fraud in which the criminal pretends to be a known person who is temporarily unavailable for his or her account. The victims transferred 17,000 euros, 6,333 euros and 2,498 euros to the crooks, which is a total of almost 26,000 euros.
“If you receive such a message, check whether it really comes from your boyfriend, girlfriend, partner or child. Call that person and ask if it is effective, ”says Dorien Baens of the LRH police zone. “If not, they are scammers.” At LRH there have been about twenty reports recently, but people are also losing very high amounts in other police zones.
