Watch out for this if you are going to have cheap Outlander

What do you really get from a used car from 25,000-100,000 kroner? We in Broom are now taking a closer look at this. We have gathered a bunch of typical cheap cars and give you our best advice: What you should know about them, what are the pros and cons and not least: What you should watch out for.

This time the car is the second generation Mitsubishi Outlander, in its time a great sales success in Norway:

What should you know about Outlander?

Most of us probably now associate the Mitsubishi Outlander with a rechargeable hybrid. But before this version came, Mitsubishi also had success with its predecessor in Norway, more specifically what was the second generation Outlander.

It came on the market in 2007 and sold very well for several years. The recipe was perfect for Norwegian customers at the time: A relatively large and spacious SUV with the option of seven seats, a frugal diesel engine and a nice price.

Now this has become a forgotten car, at the same time as age means that early copies have begun to disappear.

The most common motorization is 2-liter diesel that Mitsubishi bought from Volkswagen. The 140-horsepower is a bit noisy, but fits the car well. This Outlander also has a relatively advanced four-wheel drive system. You can choose between front-wheel drive or automatically steered 4×4. In addition, you can lock the power distribution of 50/50 front and rear. This is better than what most competitors were equipped with.

With all seven seats in use, the luggage space is very limited. The two rear seats can be folded down to the floor. As a five-seater, there is room for a lot of luggage.

Out on the road, it is noticeable that this is not a very expensive car. The driving characteristics are in the middle of the tree and not very inspiring. The interior is also characterized by cheap solutions, but is at the same time functional.

The interior gossips that this was not a particularly lavish car. But it is relatively functional.

What do you have to pay?

We are talking about a car that can be up to 15 years old. This means that we start on a wreck deposit here. For around 10,000 kroner, you can get a car that is described as a “repair object”. Either it comes with a rich list from recent EU inspections – or it is immediately time for an EU inspection that the current owner is hardly looking forward to. If you buy such a car, it is really a must to be able to brand a good deal yourself.

For up to 50,000 kroner, you can find relatively well-kept specimens that have not gone ugly, some between 150,000 and 200,000 kilometers.

If you increase to 100,000 kroner, there is a lot to choose from and then it is certainly possible to find copies that should not offer too many negative surprises in the first years.

Service history is fundamentally important here. Mileage is of course also important. But unless it is astronomical, it is more important that the car has been well followed up along the way.

Who bought it as new?

Outlander has always been a distinctly sensible purchase. The neighbor was probably neither jealous nor very impressed when you came across a new copy of this model. The possibility of seven seats was gold for many families with children. Whether you had three or four kids or wanted the opportunity to bring half the football team to training or a match.

Plus

Convenient and flexible seven-seater – many of the competitors have only five seats.

Minus

Lots of cheap plastic in the interior, noisy and not very comfortable.

This is what Broom-Benny says about this Outlander generation

Prices now start on wreckage. For around 100,000 kroner, there are many current cars to choose from.

How wrong can it go?

If you buy at the bottom of the price scale here, in theory most things can go wrong. Here you should probably have no longer time perspective on the ownership relationship than to the next EU control and take everything else as a pure bonus.

From 50,000 kroner and up, it becomes a much more common car. Check the service booklet and whether wearing parts have been replaced. A fresh EU control is also a great advantage. Then cheap Outlander can be a pretty safe purchase. The build quality is generally good and the car is also quite simple and uncomplicated, there is not much that can go wrong here.
