Suara.com – Total lunar eclipse will occur on 26 May when the Moon will be at an altitude of 4 degrees above the horizon.
Observers in Oceania, Hawaii, east Asia and Antarctica could start observing the phenomenon on May 25-27.
This also coincides when the Moon is at its closest distance to Earth, making it a Supermoon that turns the Moon reddish otherwise known as the “Blood Moon”.
The reddish color of the Moon is caused by the Earth’s atmosphere. The atmosphere tends to scatter blue light, which is one reason why the sky appears blue from the Earth’s surface.

When the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, the light from the Sun passes through the Earth’s atmosphere and the blue light is scattered.
During Moon eclipse in total, the Earth will be between the Sun and the Moon, blocking the light of the Sun from reaching the Moon.
In addition, its light is refracted and focused on the Moon. The light will hit the Moon and be reflected back to the Earth.
Therefore, observers see the Moon turning into a reddish color like blood.
When a lunar eclipse occurs, the moon will enter the shadow of the Earth’s core or umbra of the earth.

Meanwhile, the Full Moon in May is also called the Flower Moon to signify the flowers that bloom during this month.
Reporting from Space.com, Friday (21/5/2021), unlike the solar eclipse which is only visible along a narrow path, the lunar eclipse is visible from the entire night side of the earth.
However, the best views of this total lunar eclipse are in Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, islands in the South Pacific, and southwestern Alaska.
Later, the Moon will appear slightly larger than usual because Earth’s natural satellite will reach perigee or its closest point in orbit to Earth.
Usually, the Moon is about 384,500 km away and when it reaches perigee next week, the Moon will be 357,311 km from Earth.
According to Langit Selatan, observers in Indonesia cannot witness the entire eclipse process because the Moon has entered the eclipse when the Moon rises in the afternoon on May 26.
Observers in eastern Indonesia can observe most of the eclipse process when the new Moon enters the Penumbra eclipse.
Meanwhile, for the western part of Indonesia, the rising moon is already in a partial eclipse and has entered a total eclipse phase.
The start of the Penumbra eclipse will start at 15:47 WIB / 16:47 WITA / 17:47 WIT.
The peak of the total lunar eclipse can be seen at 18:18 WIB / 19:18 WITA / 20:18 WIT.
Meanwhile, the final phase of the Penumbra Eclipse occurred at 20:49 WIB / 21:49 WITA / 22:49 WIT.
Because it is closest to Earth, the lunar disc is about 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter.
