A pile of boxes at the foot of a container, a can of used oil thrown away in the selective sorting, waste deposited in bulk in the household waste… “Examples like that, we have them every week on the territory”, regrets Jérôme Landelle, vice-president of the community of communes of the Pays de Meslay-Grez in charge of waste.
Of the incivilities which have been going on for several years and which the community has decided to tackle. “It’s laziness more than ignorance,” said the chosen one.
To challenge the inhabitants, the community of municipalities has launched a communication campaign on social networks.
Incivility that affects the fee
Since February 21, 2023each week, a photo taken at a collection site is posted on the Facebook page of the community of municipalities and on the Intramuros application with, in the comments, the place of the incivility and its consequences.
Beyond the environmental and visual pollution and the danger that certain waste represents for the agents (harmful products or healthcare waste), this incivility has a cost for the community. For example, if a container is soiled with oil, it cannot be upgraded. Sorting errors represent an additional cost of €800 per month, not including the cleaning time of agents. An invoice which is reflected in the fee.
Remember good sorting habits
In Bazougers, a container caught fire on February 19 because of chimney ashes thrown into the selective sorting. “Chimney ashes can be used as a weed killer”, informs Claire Lainé, in charge of waste prevention, who will remind you in each post of the correct sorting gesture to adopt.
The territory is equipped with 33 cleanliness areas for household waste, sorting, glass and fabrics (Le Relais terminals). And five waste collection centers for rubble, bulky items, toxic waste, electricity, batteries, oil… where agents are available to help with sorting.
The elected officials are well aware that this incivility is not only the fact of the inhabitants of the territory. “The neighboring territories apply the incentive fee, so residents come and deposit their waste with us. If this continues, we will have to go there too. But it’s a shame because it represents a large installation investment. If everyone uses what exists wisely, we can control costs,” assures Jérôme Landelle.
