The total cost of Washington’s military buildup in the Middle East since the war between Israel and Hamas began a little more than three months ago is estimated at about $1.6 billion.
This was reported by two unnamed officials to Politico.
The Pentagon’s estimate, which was allegedly provided off the record to members of Congress, covers the cost of deploying warships, equipment and fighter jets to the region, the sources said.
However, insiders pointed out that the calculation did not include the cost of the missiles used by Washington in its operation against Houthi targets in Yemen, as well as the capabilities used to shoot down drones and missiles in the Red Sea.
According to the forecast, total spending on military strengthening in the region could rise to $2.2 billion for the entire year.
“It’s a bill that’s going to be due and we’re going to have to pay it within limited resources,” said one official, citing the difficulty of covering the unplanned bills amid growing uncertainty over Washington’s spending funds.
